Children: the first orthodontic consultation around the age of 5-7 years
The first orthodontic evaluation is recommended around the age of 5-7, when the first permanent teeth erupt and possible developmental problems become visible.
This does not mean that an appliance is installed at this age, but that the doctor can detect anomalies in time and intervene interceptively, guiding the growth of the jaws while it can still be influenced. A problem corrected during the growth period often means shorter and simpler subsequent treatment, sometimes even the absence of fixed appliances and the eruption of permanent teeth in correct positions. Adults: It's never too late
Teeth can be moved orthodontically at any age as long as the teeth and gums are healthy. How does orthodontic treatment with a fixed appliance proceed?
1. Orthodontic consultation and digital radiography
The orthodontist examines the teeth, bite and facial profile, and the digital X-ray taken in the office shows the position of the roots, unerupted teeth and the condition of the bone. In children, we also evaluate the stage of development of the dentition.
2. Digital scan and treatment plan
The arcades are scanned digitally, without the classic prints with impression material, a comfort difference that children especially appreciate. Based on all the data, the doctor establishes the orthodontic diagnosis and the plan: the type of appliance recommended, the estimated duration and the stages. What am I not allowed to eat with fixed braces?
With fixed orthodontic appliance, avoid hard foods (nuts, hard bagels, ice), sticky foods (candies, chewing gum) and those that bite directly: apple or corn cut into pieces. These can loosen brackets from the teeth or bend the arch, which delays treatment. Otherwise, the diet remains normal, and after the period of accommodation, chewing is no longer a problem.
How do I brush my teeth with braces?
Fixed appliance hygiene requires a little more time, not complicated techniques: brushing after every meal, interdental brushes for the spaces around each bracket and, ideally, an oral shower for hard-to-reach areas. During installation, you receive complete practical instructions, and the periodic professional sanitization during the treatment cleans what brushing at home cannot touch.
Metal appliance or aesthetic appliance: what is the difference?
The main difference is visibility: metal brackets are visible, aesthetic ones, in the shade of the tooth, are much more discreet. The mechanics of the treatment and the end result are equivalent. Metal brackets are more resistant to detachment, which is why they remain the frequent recommendation for children and teenagers, and aesthetic ones are the usual choice of adults. Fixed device or invisible devices: how do I choose?
The fixed appliance treats the entire spectrum of cases, including complex malocclusions, and does not depend on the wearing discipline, because it is permanently fixed. The clear liners are discreet and removable, but are suitable for mild to moderate cases and require 20-22 hours of wear per day. The correct choice depends on your diagnosis, and the orthodontist recommends it to you at the consultation, after the complete evaluation.
How often do I have to come for check-ups with braces?
Activations of the fixed appliance are usually done at intervals of 4 to 8 weeks, determined by the orthodontist depending on the stage of treatment. Visits are short, and adherence is essential for treatment to stay on schedule. Between activations, if a bracket comes off or the spring bothers you, call us and we'll solve it promptly, without waiting for the next appointment. If we are talking about aligners (gutières), they are replaced after 3-4 months of wear, their number varying depending on the complexity of the case. What happens after the braces are removed?
